Subproject B02 presents current work on the integration of shape memory alloys into polymer structures

On 10 September 2025, TRR 402 DediGrad was presented for the first time at the “Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures, and Intelligent Systems” (SMASIS) in St. Louis, USA. In his presentation “Integration of shape memory alloy wires in polymer structures and their applications as strain sensors and actuators”, Dr. Kenny Pagel presented current research on the integration of shape memory alloys into polymer structures.

The talk was part of the special session “Active Hybrid Composites”, organised by Dr. Martin Gurka. The session provided a professional framework for presenting current activities in the field of active polymer structures. In addition to previous work, including results from the MERGE Cluster of Excellence and activities within the Smart³ initiative on the integration of shape memory alloys into plastics, subproject B02 of the DFG Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 402 DediGrad was presented as current research in this field.

The presentation focused on approaches for integrating shape memory alloy wires into polymer structures and on their potential applications as strain sensors and actuators. In this way, subproject B02 was introduced to an international expert audience and positioned within current developments in smart and adaptive material systems.

The presentation also provides a basis for a planned peer-reviewed technical paper publication in the context of a forthcoming ASME SMASIS conference.
